The award-winning Couplet Care Bassinet sets a new standard for postpartum care, prioritizing the health and safety of mothers, newborns, and healthcare teams. 

Designed to facilitate breastfeeding, safe sleep, and maternal recovery, it enables mothers to access their newborns independently during their hospital stay, supporting safety and satisfaction. Traditional bassinets, designed for nursery care, are outdated for modern rooming-in practices. Positioned next to hospital beds and with high walls, the outdated equipment limits mother-newborn interactions, causing frustration, and contributing to infant drops and unnecessary calls to nursing. 

The Couplet Care Bassinet overcomes these barriers with a user-centered, overbed extending design. The swivel and adjustable height aligns with various bed configurations, allowing seated adjustments. A removable tub wall ensures easy bedside access and safe transport, while the rotating tub offers flexibility. 

Co-designed with researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, parents, and healthcare professionals, the bassinet reduces the need for staff to handle infants, enhancing clinical efficiency and supporting family connections. The multidisciplinary team worked closely with industrial designers to develop prototypes, iterating based on feedback from key users across hospitals in North Carolina. The result is a bassinet that seamlessly integrates the needs of both mother and newborn, promoting safety, comfort, and ease of use. Durable and easy to maintain, it elevates postpartum care with improvements in the built environment for more positive experiences.
