Our Innovation Story

The idea for nfant Thrive emerged from one of the most overlooked challenges in healthcare: understanding how newborns feed. nfant Labs was founded in 2014 by Dr. Tommy Cunningham (CEO) and Dr. Gilson Capilouto, who observed challenges in NICU feeding and sought to develop an objective, data-driven solution.

The company launched the first FDA-cleared IoT device for NICU feeding, the nfant® Thrive Bottle, which uses the combination of a wireless sensor and a cantilever inside the bottle to measure infant tongue movement during feeding. This innovation supports some of the most vulnerable infants, including those born prematurely and weighing just a pound or two. Helping a baby learn to feed is often the key to going home, and hearing from families whose journeys were transformed by nfant fueled the company’s mission.

After years of success in hospitals, the company expanded to a direct-to-consumer product line to provide data to parents at home. By pairing objective biofeedback with clear educational guidance, nfant empowers families to understand what’s happening and feel confident in their feeding journey.

In 2023, the company added nfant® Thrive Breast to its feeding system, designed to ease the concerns of nursing moms. Thrive Breast measures when milk is flowing during breastfeeding and how much milk flowed during a breastfeeding session using bioimpedance analysis.

Trust is at the core of nfant’s approach. With more than two dozen peer-reviewed studies and collaborations with top hospitals, the company has earned credibility with clinicians and families alike. That trust extends far beyond the first feeding, allowing parents to return for guidance throughout the newborn journey.

Today, nfant is leading a new era of Connected Feeding™ that is:

  • Clinically precise, built on validated biomechanics and continuous data capture
  • Parent-centered, supporting confidence, bonding, and emotional well-being
  • Accessible, bridging the gap between NICU-level insights and at-home realities
  • Transformative, enabling continuity of care from hospital to home
  • Impactful for underserved communities, where feeding support can change the trajectory of early life outcomes

By delivering measurable feeding success in the earliest days, nfant opens a lasting connection with parents at a moment when support is hardest to reach yet most needed.

Innovation & Research Highlights

Improving Feeding Outcomes in Premature Infants

nfant®’s white paper highlights how integrating Control Flow Nipples and objective feeding assessments into cue-based protocols improves outcomes for premature infants born under 30 weeks. The study showed shorter feeding-related length of stay and no post-discharge complications, demonstrating the impact of using controlled flow and real-time biofeedback to guide safer, more efficient feeding progression in the NICU.

Quantifying the Impact of Common Feeding Interventions on Nutritive Sucking Performance Using a Commercially Available Smart Bottle

A study published in the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing demonstrates how visual feedback combined with objective sucking performance metrics can be used to compare sucking skill pre/post-intervention and facilitate evidence-based decisions that optimize and personalize feeding.
